Ensuring A Vibrant, Diverse Community

Latino community
A Fenty administration will improve access to services for members of the Latino community and ensure issues directly impacting their community are addressed. We will recognize the unique issues of the Latino community and will encourage full enforcement of the Language Access Act and hire bi-lingual government employees. We will provide appropriate training for government employees to better serve the needs of the Latino community. The growing Latino community within our city will be a full part of our government in a Fenty Administration. We will encourage a greater range of participation in our business community and will enhance the efforts of the Commission on Latino Affairs as they work to address the needs of the community. Women's Issues
A Fenty administration will develop policies with the understanding that women head many families throughout the city. In that regard, it is more important than ever to empower women and girls in our community to encourage them to lead full, successful and productive lives. In turn, this empowerment will lead to more stable families and an overall stronger community.

The Washington Area Women's Foundation has identified five key areas necessary to empower women and girls in the District of Columbia. The Fenty Administration will work with the foundation and women in all Wards of the District to make progress in these areas, which include:

• Economic Security
• Health and Well-being
• Education
• Violence and safety
• Leadership and giving back

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community
The diversity of our City is one of its greatest strengths. The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) community has had a positive impact on every area of our City and I am committed to ensuring that our city will continue to be a welcoming place for members of the community to live, work, play and bring up their families.

A Fenty administration will work to ensure that the GLBT community continues to be totally integrated into the fabric of our society and enjoy all of the rights and privileges afforded to every other District resident by this City and by our nation, including the right to marry.  Until that happens, we will work with the Council to continue to expand domestic partnerships and fully support the Office of Lesbian Gay Bi and Transgender Affairs with the understanding that it will complement the work of all the existing organizations that have been working for years in DC to ensure that the rights, including the right to marry,  of all citizen's are respected without regard to sexual orientation and sexual identity.
